The Adventurers Comic in colour!

Here is a selection of finished The Adventurers Comic pages coming soon to Bolt Comics Presents! What a journey it has been to get to this point and a lot of it has been recorded in this blog but it's time to change things up a bit and let the art do the talking now.

*We take a break from The Electrifying Bolt process posts to show some Adventurers art.*

This week I thought I would share a new Adventurers print that I'll be selling at next weeks Sydney SupaNova. The eagle eyed among you will recall it's the black and white pin up image from The Adventures issue 1. I've always thought that this image would also be a good issue 1 cover image. I never used it originally because I was stubborn and wanted all The Adventurers on the cover (even though we don't see them all until issue 2) and it wasn't until issue 1 was printed that I realised this could be a cover.

I'll also be selling the new ALL colour Bolt Comics Presents issue 1 (have I mentioned it contains The Electrifying Bolt?) and drawing sketches along with my brother Dan. We'll be sharing table 71 with our good friend John Hanna from Midnight Runners. If you are going to Supanova be sure to come and say hi. It's sure to be fun!

Merry Christmas from the Adventurers 2015

This years Adventurers Christmas pic is an actual comic! The Adventurers have been in colour on the comic covers and in pin-ups but this is the first published colour Adventurers comic page (Also my first published colour comic page). The last panel was actually going to be the pic but the idea developed of Cindy telling the story to Burnie complete with her malapropisms. On a personal note the Adventurers awe of gazing at a newborn was me channelling my awe with the recent birth of my first child. My daughter, Leilani, was also reference for the babe. Merry Christmas!

Almost at the end of Adventurers issue 1. This image was done as a pin up.  I was inspired by Travis Hanson who would do little illustrations of scenes that didn't occur as part of his actual comic. I think it could have served as a good issue 1 cover but I was stubborn and wanted all three of The Adventurers on the first issue cover.

Well there it is. The cliff hanger for issue one. Funny story*: the first editions have a typo on this page. Instead of saying "you're" Rocbadger said "your", It was a great example for me to use in class on editing and checking your work properly. I'm pretty sure that year 5 class learnt the difference between "your and "you're" better than any class I had previously. Also, on a side note, the first time you have to draw your characters getting hurt is not easy!

The first appearance of the next character. However it isn't the last panel. A lot of people miss his very first appearance on this page. I may have went over board on the clouds, even sequencing their movement a little :/

Finishing with a Bang!

Work on The Adventurers issue 4 is about wrapped up so I feel the time is right to show you all something special. At last I can share the colour cover art for The Adventurers issue 4! So excited to share this. I love what Cara has done with the colours.

As many of you know, My sister Cara has been instrumental in helping to make The Adventurers comic a reality. She lettered issue 1, drew a back up story in issue 2 and has coloured all The Adventurers comic covers, making them distinctively bright and eye catching. Issue 4 will be the last cover coloured by Cara for the foreseeable future as she needs to devote more time to her illustration and design career.

The work Cara has done for The Adventurers is only a hint of what a talented artist Cara is. You can check out her work here.

 So, in essence, this blog post is a big thanks to Cara for all her help and support. I sincerely wish her all the best with her career endeavours and hope it's not too long before we can work on a comic together again. As you can see by her work above, she is literally finishing her time with Bolt Comics with Bang!

Adventurers Christmas

Adventurers Sketch cards: The last few.

More Adventurers Comic Sketch Cards.

Sydney Oz Comic Con is getting closer. Here are the latest sketch cards that early birds will be able to get with their Comic purchase at Sydney Oz Comic Con. I've also sketched some of the other characters that appear in The Adventurers Comic.

       

     

                             

                                 

Unfortunately I won't be at Oz Comic Con, that's pat of the reason I'm doing advance sketches, but the amazing Adventurers cover colourist (My sister Cara), will be doing additional sketches at Oz Comic Con. She does beautiful sketches of The Adventurers characters so you'll be very lucky if your sketch is drawn by her!

 

Adventurers Sketches

OzComicCon is less than a month away and Bolt Comics will be there! Unfortunately I will be overseas but I still want to give some lucky Adventurer Comic purchasers a bonus free sketch. I'll be doing some over the next few weeks in preparation for the convention. Here are a few I've done so far.

 

These sketches are a fun way to get better at drawing The Adventurers and sometimes it's a balancing act between drawing a favourite pose or trying something a bit new. At any rate they are pretty fun to do. Hope you enjoy them.

A sneak peek from Issue 4 of The Adventurers Comic.

Here is some work in progress shots from a few panels for issue 4 of The Adventurers.

Issue 4 has been the most artistically challenging issue yet. For one thing, the backgrounds have been quite demanding. I have been pushing myself a bit more with some sequential ideas. Also, it is set at night so I need to include heavier shadows. 

 I love shadows, especially in black and white as it creates much more of an impact, however it is a very tricky business getting it right. You can see I pencilled in the blacks before "spotting" them just to be sure!

Rocbadger Leaps into Colour!

I have been known, from time to time, to experiment with colouring pictures even though I'm a very avid fan of black and white art. I drew the following sketches at Supanova 2013. I decided they would be good for some colour and digital media practice.

This was coloured last year. I was told that the cell style shading wasn't really hitting the mark. I haven't gotten around to improving it yet. This is the first time these pictures have been on The Adventurers Comic Blog. They were originally posted on The Adventurers Comic Facebook page. You can see I've used the digital tools to add a city skyline where there was none.

 Here is a Rocbadger sketch that was also drawn at Supanova 2013.

The work in progress, using the Manga studio 5 stock gradient sunset. I also used the ruler tools to straighten up the brickwork and construct a straighter looking city silhouette.

Finally some colour and shading has been added.

The finished pic. This is the first time I've shown these coloured sketches online. I changed the sunset and added some texture to the brickwork. Hope you enjoy it.

The Adventurers and Ninja's!

I just wanted to share this commission of The Adventurers by very talented John Hanna. He tabled next to us at Supanova this year and we had a blast. You can find him on his Midnight Runners Facebook page.

I feel like John has captured that action  moment perfectly. If this was a movie the film would freeze at this point and spin around the characters then unfreeze as they launch into action. I love this picture it is definitely another highlight from Sydney Supanova 2014. I wouldn't mind seeing an Adventuer's comic drawn by John one little bit!

I almost forgot to show off this free sketch of Rocbadger that the very talented Jake Tabula drew for us to give away but I loved it so much I just couldn't part with it. It's so fun to see other people's take on the characters you have created. Jake also goes by the name Autumn North and you can follow him on twitter @autnor.

Speaking of people drawing The Adventurers and me loving it: here is the first fan art I have received since The Adventurer's has been published. it's an adorable Ellie picture by Lachlan Strachan. If you guys are inclined to draw a picture of The Adventurers send it to me or post it on The Adventurers Facebook page. I'd love to see it and if I get more pictures I'll start a fan art page on the blog!

The Adventurers: Gothic Guardians.

The Adventurers: Watching over the city.

Late last year (2013) I started this drawing of The Adventurers. It is an idea I have had for many years, that of The Adventurers perched like gargoyles on a church (not terribly original as Batman has been doing that for a long time). I drew a biro sketch in one of my Uni books many years back which is the basis of this picture. It no longer exists today. 
I'm quite happy with how this picture turned out. I was wary of applying the strong shadows but I think it paid off. I look forward to the day it is a coloured cover of an issue of The Adventurers comic!

It's here! The Adventurers Issue 2!

The adventure continues! Ellie is learns more about the mysterious Rocbadger. They travel together and meet a mute Robot and his unlikeable maker. Also a Rob and Hood back up story illustrated and co-written by my very talented sister Cara who also added the amazing colours to the cover above.

Issue 2 has been a learning curve and hopefully a refining of the process of getting The Adventurers comic  printed. I had to take a crash course on the basics of Manga Studio 5 but I was determined to use only one program if possible. I have also used a different printer for issue 2. It took a few proofs (I didn't get any for issue 1. Lesson learned.) to get the book to look how I wanted (basically getting the trim exact and paper stock to match isuue 1) but I couldn't be happier with the final result! In the end it took a lot longer to get Issue 2 out than I anticpated but since there were no impending conventions I took my time to work on the production process.
